Maamaawi Kiigitowin - Talking Together
What is Maamaawi-Kiigitowin?
Maamaawi-Kiigitowin means "talking together". It is what we are calling our two days of consultations in Pic Mobert and Binjitiwaabik Zaaging Anishinaabek focussed on how everyone can support the growth and development of youth in the community.
Sounds great! When and where are these consultations?
In Pic Mobert, all events will be held at the community hall. On January 31, community members can participate from 10:30 - 2:30 and from 6:00-8:30. On February 1, community members can participate from 9:00 - 1:00.
In BZA, all events will be held in the school gym. On February 2, community members can participate from 10:30 - 2:30 and from 6:00-8:30. On February 3, community members can participate from 9:00 - 1:00.
Community members are encouraged to attend all sessions, but if you can't make it out to all of the sessions, come when you can! We are designing things so that there will always be a meaningful way to participate.
What does "Education Circle" mean?
In picturing what this would look like, we imagined schools, families, and community orgaizations arranged in a circle of support around our young people. You can see a picture of this concept to the right.
Will it be fun?
We hope so! Lunch will be provided each day for those participating, and we'll draw for some door prizes. The event will be moderated by Ron Kanutski, and he will be doing some comedy during the evening session. This will be a time to celebrate our successes and really look at ways to improve how we support young people in our communities.
Why these two communities?
This event is being run through the Structural Readiness Program, which supports Nokiiwin Tribal Council in building capacity to provide education services. Pic Mobert and BZA are the two participating communities in this program that have schools in their community, which provide a clear focus for these discussions. Going forward, Nokiiwin is looking at ways to work with all our communities to strengthen the supports around our youth.
